Position Summary [Purpose and Scope]: The IFP Attorney is employed by a certified domestic violence center to provide direct representation to survivors of domestic, dating and sexual violence and stalking in temporary and final injunction for protection proceedings and in violations of injunctions. The IFP Attorney will 1) represent survivors seeking injunctions by drafting and filing the ex parte petition for injunction and representing the survivor at the final injunction hearing; 2) represent survivors who have obtained a temporary injunction on their own and need representation at the hearing on the final injunction; and 3) represent survivors by filing affidavits of violation of injunction.

Position will focus on representation in South Sarasota County and DeSoto County. Primary office will be in Venice, with office space also provided in Sarasota & Arcadia.

Benefits: Benefits will be provided to this position which will consist of @ 100%; Health Insurance, Dental Insurance, Short/Long Term Disability Insurance and Life Insurance after 1st 30 day calendar month and a matching program in our 403(b) Retirement plan after 1 yr of employment. Employees have the option to purchase dependent health insurance coverage. All full time staff receives 12 paid Holidays. All full time staff will accrue PTO per pay period based on numbers of years of employment.

Specific Duties:

  • Provide direct legal representation to survivors of domestic, dating, and sexual violence and stalking in injunction for protection proceedings and in filing affidavits of violation of injunctions.
  • Assess the other needs of survivors and make appropriate referrals for services.
  • Conduct outreach in the service area to develop collaborative partnerships.
  • Complete monthly and other reports as required by agency funders to monitor completion of project deliverables.
  • Participate in trainings to meet continuing education and certification requirements.
  • Keep Supervising Attorney apprised of activities, informally and by written word.
  • Perform other VOCA allowable duties as necessary or assigned to assist victims of crime.

Education or Equivalent: Candidate will possess a JD from an accredited law school, and two years of litigation experience, preferably representing survivors of domestic, dating and sexual violence and stalking in injunction for protection proceedings and other civil legal matters, or prosecuting batterers in criminal proceedings. Providing direct legal representations while a law student in a supervised law school legal clinic or internship may be included as litigation experience.

Compensation: Range $65,000 – $80,000 per year, based on experience. SPARCC does not provide relocation expenses.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements: Must possess a strong understanding of the dynamics of intimate partner violence and the heightened safety risks faced by survivors seeking to leave or end the abusive relationship by filing for an injunction for protection. The IFP Project Attorney will possess highly developed interpersonal skills, as well as critical thinking and problem solving skills, and must be able to make appropriate decisions relating to providing effective legal representations with minimal supervision. Certification or licensing requirements: Florida licensed attorney in good standing with no prior Florida Bar disciplinary proceedings that resulted in the imposition of any penalty.

Physical Requirements: Position requires physical ability to lift approximately 25 lbs., sit or be on feet for extend periods of time, bend freely, and reach objects over head. Must be able to converse on a telephone and use a keyboard effectively.
